How To Auto-sync A USB Thumb Drive With Folders On The PC? In 4 Easy Steps

This question already comes with a answer here: What the heck is the obvious way to maintain a folder synchronized with my USB drive? 7 answers

In my job we usually are not bound to maintain with all the very same personal computer forever. Also, I have to keep the files at arm's reach when traveling. This can be screaming a "cloud" answer, but within Brazil mobile connectivity is a worry, and counting on corporation networks there is certainly Usually the firewall and network policy concern, so cloud is no-go.

So i began employing a 16GB flash drive to store all my individual and work documents. But My business is afraid someday the thumb drive will die on me and i will lose everything. Also I have a hard time while i forget it at home and can't access my files.

Thus am in search of some utility/script that may run on my house and work computers and whenever I connect the thumb drive, it detects it as my thumb-drive and synchronizes with folders about the computer, kinda like rsync.

They are the necessary features:

Securely recognizes the thumb-drive (using a unique "key" file or volume serial numbers)
Update only modified files (no dumb-copying, as it's various GB)
If data was modified on both for the thumb-drive and the personal computer, look for which one to keep.
I may well choose which folders to sync (don't want to sync the music folder, as an example)
Non-annoying operation, just ask for a choice on conflicts if needed (but a progress indicator would be nice).

Desirable yet not needed, are syncing being accomplished automatically before removal (instead of at insertion).

Could there be a ready-made Windows tool because of this job? This could be pulled out that has a batch file but I wanna know if there is certainly some thing in the marketplace already.

Thanks!

SyncToy can be quite very good, but provides the flaw of needing Administrator account for installation. I desired to sync with na old XP function backup pc usb drive, with limited permissions. I've settled for Unison http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ . It is a command-line app, but matches all my requirements, and doesn't have to be installed.

windows sync usb-flash-drive, Microsoft SyncToy may perhaps work for the job.

Desynchronize is freeware and doesn't install (stand-alone)

Performing anything before removing the drive is much harder, but Desynchronize offers real-time sync, which must do the trick.

That was quick! SyncToy did the trick, the only missing feature will be the auto-run, but I can implement that very easily having a batch. thanks! ?NothingsImpossible Nov 27 '13 at 2:37
