Professional Environmental Engineers, Inc. (PE) is a 25-year old environmental consulting and engineering firm that specializes in providing cost-effective environmental solutions for both government and commercial clients. PE has been growing at a rate of 30% each of the last three years and is seeking a full-time Project Manager to manage the execution of compliance and permitting projects in the Midwest, primarily in IL, to support our Downers Grove, Illinois office. This position will be involved in a variety of projects that include cultural resource management, environmental planning, and regulatory compliance, with particular emphasis on managing a large scale stormwater program. This position will assist in compliance efforts for preconstruction planning, construction, and post-construction operations and maintenance in the oil and gas, transmission, and power generation markets.


The successful candidate will be assisting a team of environmental professionals in helping clients maintain environmental compliance with Federal, State, County and Local permit conditions and reporting requirements on construction projects. This position will also work closely with contractors, clients, resource monitors, environmental inspection staff, and agency representatives to ensure compliance with permit requirements, and mitigation plans. Minimum Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental-related discipline (Environmental Engineering, Wetland Science, Soil Science, Biology, Geology, Ecology, or other related environmental science) and a minimum of 7 years of related experience.

  • Three years of experience as a Project Manager (PM) overseeing the budget, schedule, and technical aspects of environmental projects.

  • Experience in developing and managing National Pollutant Discharge Eliminations System (NPDES) and state equivalent permits, stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs), and spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plans.

  • Experience with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance during construction and experience in implementing and tracking mitigation measures.

  • At least five years of experience performing wetland delineations and function assessments, preferably in the State of Illinois.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local permitting laws and processes, particularly those specific to Illinois and the Chicago area.

  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills. Applicant must be capable of summarizing investigation findings and field methods. Strong communications skills are required as the successful candidate will work with other scientists, engineers, project managers, and clients in the execution of projects.

  • Highly motivated, solution-driven, client-focused attitude, and detail oriented.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.

  • Working proficiency in computer software programs, particularly GIS, Adobe, and Microsoft Office Products.

  • Ability to travel (less than 25%).


Preferred Position Requirements:

  • Project Management experience on compliance projects

  • Experience in mining, transmission, oil and gas, and/or power generation clients

  • Experience with local, state, and federal permitting programs in any of the following states: IL (preferred), IN, MO, WI, MN, MI, OH

  • State of Illinois certifications

  • Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist is a plus

  • Experience in proposal preparation, environmental planning, and wetland mitigation

  • Experience working with regulatory agencies.

  • Experience with CERCLA and RCRA regulations.

  • Valid OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER
